The Florida Homestead Exemption - Deadline March 1st

There is an additional $25,000 exemption for non-school-related property taxes. In order to qualify for this exemption, property owners must meet certain requirements and apply to the local County Property Appraiser's Office. This exemption can help to significantly reduce the amount of taxes that are due on a property.

Overview of Eligibility Requirements

In order to qualify for a Homestead Exemption, property owners must:

  • Own and occupy a permanent residence in Florida as of January 1st of the tax year.

  • Be a U.S Citizen or legal resident alien and provide proof of residency in the form of a valid Florida driver’s license or Florida identification card.

  • Be the sole owner of the property and not claim a homestead exemption on any other property in Florida.

  • Not be claiming a homestead exemption on any business-owned property.

How to Apply for the Homestead Exemption

In order to apply for the Homestead Exemption in Florida, property owners must submit an application to their local County Property Appraiser’s Office. There are two options for filing:

A. E-File Option

Property owners can fill out the online application on the county's website and receive an immediate response regarding their eligibility status.

B. Visit a Service Center Option

Property owners can also visit a service center to fill out the application in person. All the necessary forms and instructions will be provided at the service center.


The deadline for applying for Homestead Exemption is March 1st of each year. Applications must be received by this date in order to be considered. Property owners who miss the application due date will not be eligible for a Homestead Exemption in the current tax year.
